Apex takes its name from its spot at the highest point on the old Chatham Railroad, and the Apex Union Depot still sits at the heart of town. After a 1911 fire burned most of the business district, downtown was rebuilt, and it is now one of the most intact railroad towns in the state, with PeakFest filling the streets every May.
