Thomasville is the Chair City, home of the Big Chair, a 30-foot concrete copy of a Duncan Phyfe armchair that has sat between the two Main Streets since 1951. The town grew up around John Warwick Thomas's first store and the railroad that split it north and south, and it still throws Everybody's Day, the oldest festival in the state. Up close in daylight, the black track tucks in under the soffit and the lights read as small, tidy pucks. The aluminum track is color-matched to the trim, so from the street it is nearly invisible.
