Summerfield started out as Bruce's Crossroads, settled around 1769, and in February 1781 Patriot forces under Henry Lee III sent British cavalry into retreat right at that crossroads. The post office arrived in 1812 along with the new name, after the evangelist John Summerfield, and the town still owns the Martin House on its historic square. Out back, warm white permanent lighting along a covered patio and around the pool turns the yard into an evening room, controlled from an app and scheduled to run on its own.
