Jamestown was settled largely by Quaker families from Pennsylvania, and George Mendenhall named the village in 1816 for his father, James. Richard Mendenhall's 1811 plantation homestead is still the highlight of any tour of town, and the 1915 school in the heart of Jamestown now holds the public library. On a stone home with lit planting beds out front, a warm white roofline ties the whole picture together, on a schedule that runs itself from dusk to dawn.
